on a late night, in a college dorm...
THE TELEVISION: dragonflies and butterflies...
THE TELEVISION: where have they gone?
THE TELEVISION: polluted seas, polluted skies, the fields and mountains are silent...
the television murmurs with the sound of a movie not even the mannequins which line the room seem to be interested in watching. the air conditioner kicks on, then off, like it walked in something it shouldn't have, and turned away before getting too good a look.
godzilla versus hedorah isn't one of their favorites.
they think there's a lot of charm to it, though.
it has this artistic joie de vivre that a lot of meat-and-potatoes godzilla movies really lack, at least until the turn of the millennium. you have to be in the right mindset for it...
and they are clearly not.
🗡🗡🗡
she is looming atop them, their glasses are fogged over, and it's difficult to make anything out. all the better, piper supposes. the heavy breathing is the most tangible part, most of the time. the television, ignored, sculpts davinci's body in red light.
DAVINCI: Hey.
DAVINCI: What are you thinking about...?
musculature befitting michelangelo's masterwork, they think, not that she'd appreciate them saying that. the night scenes - of which there are many in godzilla movies, the suits they use don't hold up to a clear view - dim that light, and her form is no longer as comprehensible. they wonder if she prefers it that way, too.
PIPER: what, like- right now???
DAVINCI: Yeah. Right now.
PIPER: um... .
PIPER: it's getting in the way, a little bit...
PIPER: you look like the girl from the grudge.
PIPER: the one that comes out of the tv.
PIPER: if she was white.
DAVINCI: The girl doesn't come out of the TV in The Grudge.
DAVINCI: You're thinking of The Ring.
PIPER: ...
DAVINCI: That can't be all you're thinking about.
PIPER:
DAVINCI: I've read your blog, I know that can't be it.
PIPER: well. o-okay. um. it's not.
DAVINCI: If you tell me what you're thinking about... I'll tell you what I'm thinking about.
PIPER: i- i think you should start, actually
DAVINCI: Mine's... not possible.
PIPER: oh, did- did you think mine was???
DAVINCI: Maybe it was foolish to do so.
DAVINCI: What is it?
on a normal day, the rattle of the train would only bother you a little bit. but today, of all days, it rings like nothing else. , it puts a damper on your already dim spirits.
it's hard to be more down on things than when you're forced to evacuate tokyo. hideaki anno understood that.
